Sergio Fermariello lives and works in Naples

Sergio Fermariello was born in Naples on April 29, 1961. After studying and graduating from high school of this city, specializing in the sciences, Fermariello attended courses in life sciences at the university of Naples. At the age of twenty he decided to devote himself exclusively to art. His resaerch started out from a reclamation of models, of familiars memories, that was extended to a more probing investigation of universal archai in the recovery of a collective unconsious memory.
In 1989 Fermariello exhibited his work for the first time in a one-man show at the Galleria Lucio Amelio, with which he embarked on a long working partner-ship. The same year he won the first prize of the 'Saatchi & Saatchi international Prize for Younf Artists', the first time he was awarded, at the Palazzo delle Stelline in Milan. Subsequently he staged several one-man shows, including one at the Galleria Il Capricorno in Venice in 1990 and at Galerie Yvon Lambert in Paris in 1992. His work has also been shown at a number of important international events, such as the Metropolis exhibition at the International Kunstausstellung in Berlin in 1991 and the exhibition Les Pictographs at the Musée de l'Abbaye Sainte-Croix in Les Sables-d'Olonne, where Didier Ottinger invited him to show his work alongside painitngs by Klee, Miro, Picasso, Penck and Senejouand.
In 1993, at the age of just thirty-two, he was asked by Achille Bonito Oliva to take part in the 45th venice International Biennial Exhibition of Art, with an entire room devoted to Fermariello's work in the Italian Pavilion within the frame-work of the exhibition entitled 'Italian Work - Triptychs'. For this occasion he presented two large works made up of three panels in which he developed the essential figuration of the Warriors, a motif that has pervaded the artist's entire body of research since 1989.
In 1995 he showed several works of a three dimensional character at the exhibition Opus Alchemico held at the Galleria In Arco in Turin: halfway between painting and sculpure, they constituted a further stage in the artist's early developement.
One of his works went into Terrae Motus Collection, founded by the Neapolitan gallery owner. In these years Fermariello exhibit at the Protirion in Spalato, the Albrecht Gallery in Munich and Il Capricorno Gallery in Venice.
